Unless you've been living under a rock, you are probably familiar with the immense popularity of yoga. The holistic mindfulness system features breathing exercises, poses and stretches that have earned praise from enthusiasts of all ages, backgrounds and skill levels. So what are the benefits of yoga, besides helping practitioners strengthen their bodies, calm their minds and achieve inner peace? According to instructor Seane Corn, the regimen can be empowering, too.

The Lorton Patch reports that Corn credits yoga for helping her become a leader, rather than a follower, in the Occupy Wall Street movement that has taken hold all over the U.S. in recent weeks.

The political activist was introduced to the Eastern program in 1987 and has been practicing it ever since, which made her feel confident enough to lead hundreds of other protesters in a series of yoga poses and a chant calling for Americans to rally together for health, happiness and prosperity.

"What is happening out here is yoga because it is about connection, community, unity, love, truth, happiness. This is why we are here," the protesters said, led by Corn and quoted by the news source. "We stand for opportunity. We stand for equality. We stand for love."
