Wondering what are the benefits of yoga? Stress relief and tranquility, to name just two

If you're a Washington State resident, chances are you've come across at least one individual who has raved about the Seattle yoga studio they go to. The holistic mind-body regimen is widespread in the U.S., sweeping through gyms and fitness facilities across the nation. But exactly what are the benefits of yoga, you ask? Why have millions of Americans adopted the gentle poses, relaxing stretches and calming breathing techniques?

The answer is simple – yoga can help you feel more at peace, grounded and centered. Taking an hour each day to perform the tranquil exercises may help soothe your nerves after a long and hectic day of work and responsibility. What better way to alleviate stress than to engage in a program that can benefit your physical, mental and emotional health all at once?

According to Bloomberg, the yoga trend is gaining popularity among those with high-pressure occupations. Financier Corina Cotenescu, who experiences firsthand the anxiety of watching the rise and fall of stocks on a daily basis, adopted yoga to help her cope with her tension.

"The class helped me let it go," she said of her stress, quoted by the news source. "If I lost money, I go straight to class, because I know I have emotional baggage that I need to get out. Yoga gives me the physical and emotional gratification and trading gives me the intellectual gratification."

Cotenescu added that yoga is a recession-proof practice in that people engage in the holistic art in both bad and good times.

According to a 2011 report conducted by the Sporting Goods Manufacturers Association, there are approximately 21.8 million yoga enthusiasts in the U.S. Participation has increased 23.2 percent in the past two years, experts estimate.
