By now, almost everyone knows about the holistic mind-body regimen called yoga. The program first originated in the East many years ago and has since taken the Western world by storm. These days, it is often easy to find classes that focus on meditation and deep breathing at fitness facilities throughout the nation.

But what are the benefits of yoga? Why is it so popular? The answer lies in its ability to enhance multiple aspects of an individual's well-being at once, according to enthusiasts. The regimen promotes gentle stretches and soothing poses that are meant to enhance flexibility, endurance and stamina. Performing these maneuvers while inhaling and exhaling with purpose can calm the brain, improving one's mood and facilitating the flow of energy throughout the body.

This multifaceted impact on well-being is one reason why David Frankel turned to the holistic program, according to the Sun-Sentinel. For 22 years, Frankel served as a criminal prosecutor, dealing with cases that were often horrific in nature.

"I felt I had reached the peak of what I was doing in law, but I didn't sleep well," he told the news source. "It was swallowing me whole. I had to make a change."

In order to shake off the past, Frankel turned to yoga for relief. Over time, he learned how to breathe, relax and achieve better balance in his life. His classes are variously relaxing and challenging, according to students.

"I always thought that yoga had something to do with meditation, but I didn't know it was so strenuous," said enthusiast Curtis Hodge, a Vietnam veteran who took up the class to help him sleep through the night, quoted by the news source.

People all over the U.S. have reported that yoga has many positive effects on their lives. This may be why so many Washington state residents have found comfort and balance in a Seattle yoga studio.
